Education  ::  Student Leadership Council (SLC)

The purpose of the SLC is to build a community within the ERC by engaging, encouraging, and providing opportunities for all students to become well-rounded engineers. The student leadership council is made up of graduate students from across FREEDM’s campuses. The mission of the SLC is to:

  • Help build a 'FREEDM Community’ to make your study life here enjoyable and fruitful;
  • Facilitate Communication (between students, between students and faculty and staff, between students and industry professionals);
  • Address students' concerns (lab facility, cubicles, etc.);
  • promote the use of the FREEDM intranet;
  • Provide opportunities for students to improve their communication skills, leadership skills, etc.

To reach these goals, we have our SLC organized in the following structure:

Seminar Coordinator: Help recruit student speakers; gather feedback or suggestions from all students about the speaker and topic selection.

Sports Coordinator: Help form several clubs, such as soccer, basketball, badminton etc.; define guidelines for how the center can support and encourage this kind of activity.

Research Forum Coordinator: Organize a one day forum for students to present their work as a way for information exchange between different research groups and also as an orientation for new students.

SLC 1

Social Activity Coordinator:

  1. Organize a new student welcome cookout.
  2. Organize Thanksgiving celebration party.
  3. Organize other social activities.

Publication Coordinator:

  1. Help provide ideas for the quarterly Newsletter.
  2. Update SLC activities on the FREEDM website.
  3. Organize student peer review for the papers and advise on posters and other publications.

Industry Collaboration Coordinator: Work with Director of Industry and Innovation. Organize center students to visit and interact with industry partners.

School Outreach Coordinator: Work with Outreach program to plan up to 8 school visits (Expert Classroom Visitor Program) which will include gathering student volunteers, scheduling.

SLC 2

Science Olympiad Coordinator: Work with Outreach program to coordinate a Center student team to lead the Shock Value event. Activities include the Coaches Clinic, writing and building the regional event, Raleigh regional tournament, writing and building the state event, and the state tournament.

Exhibit Coordinator: Coordinate other outreach events that may include Engineering Open House, Earth Day, EV Challenge, or other similar demonstration/outreach activities.

Education Coordinator: Work closely with the Education Team to increase dissemination of education program information to Center students and further awareness of Center education programs to ALL undergraduate and graduate students by participating and recruiting Center students for exposition booths, organized events, email messages, etc.

Cross Campus Coordinator: Plan and coordinate communication among the FREEDM ERC’s member institutions.

Public Relationship Coordinator: Generate ideas that may promote our center’s research and students through various media.
