Event Navigation

Modular Solid State Transformers (SSTs) capable of connecting to medium voltage distribution systems can provide an effective, scalable solution to grid expansion bottlenecks. One barrier to modularity is the auxiliary power supply (APS). Internalizing the APS (called a Local Power Supply or LPS) is an effective strategy to overcome this barrier. However, existing solutions only partially address the associated tightly coupled challenges. Researchers at the FREEDM Center at NC State built and tested an LPS which holistically solves the issues of high voltage, wide input range, noise, size, and cost. Our LPS features a unique modulator and a 3.3kV SiC supercascode switch structure with a single controller flyback solution that reduces complexity, cost, and size. In this webinar, Pranit Prawar presented his theoretical development and experimental results. Watch the recording on our YouTube channel.
