Solid State Transformer

The purpose of the Solid State Transformer (SST) project is to develop technology for medium-voltage, high-frequency power electronics, the use of which increases energy density and has the potential to simplify system design, reduce costs, and improve efficiency and system reliability. SST is critical to the FREEDM system, as it provides the control and physical interfaces that support three of the system’s major functionalities: plug-and-play, intelligent power management, and intelligent fault management. Research into medium-voltage power electronics also has wide-ranging impacts beyond smart grid application; examples of other potential applications include DC data centers and faster electric vehicle charging.
